Korean unions rally for labour rights in Fiji
On World Tourism Day (September 27) unions in Korea rallied in defence of worker and trade union rights in Fiji and denounced the military dictatorship.
Several IUF affiliates including the Korean Federation of Private Service Workers Unions (KFSU), the Coca-Cola Beverage Company North Labor Union, the Nestle Korea Labor Union and the KCTWU Dongsuh Foods Union Chapter and Oriental Breweries Union Chapter rallied to demand the restoration of human rights in Fiji and respect for trade rights - including the right of Fiji Sugar & General Workers Union members to strike.
The protest action was joined by the Federation of Korea Trade Unions (FKTU), the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and its affiliates the Korean Metal Workers' Union (KMWU) and the Korean Health and Medical Workers' Union (KHMU). The unions demanded that the Fiji government stop all harassment and intimidation of trade unionists and drop the charges against trade union leaders Felix Anthony and Daniel Urai.
The KFSU affiliates that joined the action included the Sejong Hotel Labor Union, K-Hotel Labor Union and the Hilton Hotel Labor Union who marked World Tourism Day in solidarity with the IUF-affiliated National Union of Hospitality Catering and Tourism Industries Employees (NUHCTIE).
