Dutch food company Vion has announced that the Hall's of Broxburn pork plant in West Lothian, Scotland, is at risk of closure, with the loss of 1,700 jobs.

In receivership since June 1st, French poultry giant, Doux, is running out of cash. This bankruptcy affects some 3,600 workers in France as well as 800 contract farmers and 20- 30,000 indirectly-employed persons.

The IUF’s European regional organization, EFFAT, organized a conference for union representatives in the meat sector in Berlin on June 19-20. The 42 delegates from 17 unions in 14 European countries discussed the challenges facing meat workers and their unions and heard about progress made and examples of successful strategies for fighting precarious employment and raising standards for workers in the sector.

Unions representing poultry processing workers in the United States have spoken out strongly against a proposed new rule being promoted by the industry to replace government inspectors with industry “self-inspection” and permit significant speedup of the already dangerously fast line speeds at which chickens are processed.

At an informal meeting in Geneva on February 24, 2012, the provisional meat sector steering group agreed on the need for a framework for coordinating global, affiliate-driven work in the meat sector with the aim of improving union density, moving companies to respect union rights and raising standards for meat workers.
