Compass announces mass layoffs: workers get austerity while company maintains profits

Printer-friendly version

Compass, the UK based global catering and facilities management company has launched a program of mass layoffs of workers in the Euro-Mediterranean area. In Italy the company plans to lay off almost 1000 of its 9000 employees. Company management explained the layoffs as necessary to retain forecasted profit margins!

The IUF stands in solidarity with these workers and has sent a strong message to the company condemning the layoffs and pointing out the social and personal consequences of loss in employment. Once again it is clear that austerity is only for workers and doesn't apply to corporate profits. The IUF calls on Compass to respect its collective agreements with unions and immediately enter into negotiations to find agreement on protecting jobs.
