Union busting at Kraft/Mondelez in Egypt, Tunisia - the company responds

Printer-friendly version

Reports of arbitrary and punitive suspensions and dismissals have reached the IUF from trade unions at Kraft operations in Tunisia and Egypt. These cases, which are now the subject of urgent action campaigns on the IUF website, have caught the attention of the Business and Human Rights Resource Center (www.business-humanrights.org), which asked Kraft to respond.

The company's response was imprecise and misleading on Egypt and an embarrassment on Tunisia.

In our response, the IUF highlights the contempt Kraft management showed workers in Egypt who formed an independent union and the company's contempt for the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines. It can be found by clicking here.

In its second response, Kraft/Mondelez continues to make outrageous claims about bonus payments and makes no reference to the unlawful suspension of 5 trade union leaders! They continue to deny responsibility for their Tunisian joint venture business in which they hold a 49% stake and which produces Kraft-branded products!

Mondelez workers and their unions would do well to ask the company whether it is their stated position that the UN Guiding Principles and the OECD Guidelines do not apply to them!
