Murder of our sister Kyra Zulueta Enríquez Mena in Guatemala

Our affiliate FESTRAS, in Guatemala, condemns in the strongest terms the murder of the trade union leader Kyra Zulueta Enríquez Mena, last Friday 22 March. She died as a consequence of several bullets being fired to execute her.

Kyra was General Secretary of the Workers’ Union of the Municipality of Nueva Concepción, in Escuintla Department, affiliated to FESTRAS.

Our sister Kyra was an example of commitment in the struggle against social injustice.

We demand that the competent authorities carry out an exhaustive investigation until the murder of our sister Kyra Zulueta Enríquez Mena is explained in full.
We urge the country’s trade unions and the people of Nueva Concepción, Escuintla, to support the struggle of the municipal workers to defend their rights at work.

This represents a serious setback for democracy and the guarantees embodied in the Constitution of the Republic of Guatemala, and the International Conventions ratified by Guatemala.
