May 17: International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia - LGBT rights are workplace issue - violence and discrimination widespread

A survey conducted of around 93,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from all across the EU and Croatia has found has that a quarter of respondents had been subjected  to attacks or violent threats in the past five years.

Twenty percent of gay or bisexual respondents and twenty nine percent of transgender respondents said they had suffered discrimination at work or when looking for a job.

The survey was conducted by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and the findings released at a major international conference in the Netherlands to mark May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

In almost 80 countries same sex relationships are illegal and in 9 countries are punishable by death.
