Brazilian hotel workers on strike in Bahia

Printer-friendly version

Members of the IUF-affiliated Contratuh are organizing strikes and protests in support of their demand for a 10% pay raise. The basic salary in this industry is 720 Brazilian Real (ca. USD 323), only slightly more than the national minimum wage and less than the price of a single night in some of the hotels where protests are taking place.

Industrial action and protests began in hotels hosting football teams playing in the Confederation Cup. The employers, who have said they will not offer more than 5%, sought and obtained an injunction to halt industrial action from the Labour Tribunal, which has ordered half the workforce to return to work to maintain service.

Workers however are refusing to return to their jobs without a serious proposal from employers.
