Korean Women's union challenges abusive treatment of janitors at Hyatt Regency Incheon

Printer-friendly version

Since December 3 the Korean Women's Trade Union (KWTU) has been holding rallies in front of the Incheon Hyatt Regency to protest the abusive treatment of women janitors. Since this department was outsourced women janitors have been employed under new work contracts without notification and paid for only 6 of an 8-hour shift.

Following KWTU protests of these abuses, the contractor - a subsidiary of Hyundai Development Company - has compelled these workers to rest for 3 hours in an underground resting room without heat and has threatened them with non-renewal of their contracts. Both Hyatt Regency Ingeon management and the contractor have denied responsibility for the situation, in response to which the union has filed a complaint with the regional Ministry of Employment and Labour for violation of the minimum wage law.
