Pepsico Moscow workers have organised into a union

On 8 September 2010, workers of one of the production sites of LLC PepsiCo Holdings in the town of Domodedovo, Moscow region, founded a trade union organization which joined the Agro-industrial workers’ trade union of Moscow and thus became an IUF affiliate.

Members of the trade union said it was management’s standard answer to any question related to labor issues or conditions of work that motivated them to organise – “If you do not like it – you can leave”! The workers are convinced: they have legal rights and those rights should be well defended.

At the founding meeting they elected Dmitry Chernishov a chairman of the local. So far, just two other workers have decided to openly announce their membership (for the purpose of negotiating with the company) – in order to guard the other people from possible consequences of disapproval and pressure from the employer. It was for the same reason that the local trade union organization did not disclose itself before the management for the first 20 days of its existence. And this tactics may well be justified: the “open” members of the trade union committee have already experienced some pressure (until now not very strong) from the management which started practically immediately after they had notified the company of the local trade union’s foundation. However the trade union members hope to find a way to have a dialogue with the company.

Says Dmitry Chernishov: “We have founded the organization so we will be treated fairly, to always have order in the plant, so that the management’s actions would not be arbitrary. We stand for a reasonable and constructive dialogue with the employer. Unfortunately so far the company prefers to keep the communication with the workers’ collective a one-way road.”
