Israel: Significant breakthrough for contract workers

On February 12 the Histadrut, Israel’s national trade union centre ended a four day national strike in support of non-union and exploited contract workers in the country.

The strike followed lengthy negotiations which finally reached deadlock three months ago and led to a four hour symbolic national strike in November 2011 which forced the government to resume negotiations.

When deadlock again occurred the Histadrut announced a further much longer strike on February 8 that finally produced the breakthrough they sought on February 12.

The International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations (IUF) is an international federation of trade unions representing workers employed in agriculture and plantations; the preparation and manufacture of food and beverages; hotels, restaurants and catering services; all stages of tobacco processing. The IUF is composed of 394 affiliated organizations in 126 countries representing a combined membership of around 2,6 million.
