Strike at Nestlé Tunisia

Workers at Nestlé Tunisia have gone on strike on 8 and 9 October 2012 in protest against management refusal to open discussions on their long-standing demands.
Following an action last July (wearing red armbands), the union - affiliated to the FGAT-UGTT - sent a letter to the general manager informing him of the suspension of the action and calling for talks. Rather than reply, management issued a press release

IUF Dairy Division launches a global organising initiative "A Fair Deal for Dairy Workers"

The Dairy Division leadership group met on 3&4 October and lauched a global organising initiative "A Fair Deal for Dairy Workers". At the core of this initiative is the right of dairy workers everywhere to have access to join a union and to enter into collective bargaining.

Urgent Action UPDATE - Human Rights Activist, IUF representative in Algeria beaten and jailed

On 1 October, Algerian IUF representative and human rights activist Yacine Zaïd was stopped by police in Ouargla province, interrogated and beaten over a period of two hours. He was then abducted in a car with no licence plates.

Witnesses to the beating have expressed concern over the seriousness of his injuries and we have now learned that he remains in police custody and is to appear shortly before the Prosecutor of Ouargla province.

Urgent Action Human Rights Activist, IUF representative in Algeria abducted

On 1 October, Algerian IUF representative and human rights activist Yacine Zaïd was picked up off the street in Hassi Messaoud in the Ouargla province by unidentified men in a white Nissan 4x4 vehicle and has not been seen since. His location at this time is unknown. Zaïd had earlier been beaten upon being  taken into custody by Algerian police prior to his release and subsequent abduction.

Fairtrade joins calls for restoration of workers’ rights in Fiji

Fairtrade International (FLO), the IUF, ITUC and British TUC have issued a joint statement calling for “full restoration of workers’ and farmers’ rights to.. freedom of association and collective bargaining  to be recognized..as a key part of the process of democratic reform in Fiji”.

Uruguay: The greatest challenge ahead is to engage young people in union activities

“Tito” Zelko is a C.P.A. who has been working for the Finance Department of The Coca Cola Company since 1985. He was previously employed by the Ford Motor Company until that same year, when the automotive firm closed down its offices in Uruguay. Zelko was hired by TCCC at the time when Uruguay was leaving behind a period of military dictatorship (1973 - 1985).

Urgent Action Anti-union aggression continues at Kraft Tunisia

Management at the Saida biscuit factory in Tunisia continues its anti-union aggression as their response to a deadlock in collective bargaining negotiations.

Editorial Social audits no substitute for strong unions and government regulation

The textile factory in Karachi, Pakistan in which nearly 300 workers burned to death on September 12 had only weeks before received the coveted Social Accountability International's SA8000 certificate, indicating that it was in compliance with the standards on working conditions and safety standards.
